Adobe Flash Player 16.0.0.305

Adobe Flash is an essential component for watching video and playing multimedia games on the web. Note that this version is for Intel Macs only. If you don't have an Intel Mac running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or later, you can also download Adobe Flash 10 for PPC Macs and Adobe Flash 9 for Mac OS X 10.1-10.3.

Powerful 3D engine

Adobe Flash Player has a host of features which make Flash even more potent and powerful than before and it's developers that really have something to cheer about. These include new expressive features and visual performance improvements that allow interactive designers and developers to build even richer and impressive Web videos.
To get a taste of what we mean, once you’ve installed Flash Player 11, view the interactive demos to see the new 3D engine put through its paces. It's the new 3D possibilities that are the most exciting aspect of this release, but that's bolstered by some new custom filters and effects, advanced ways of laying out text and enhanced sound APIs. Indeed, the sound from Adobe Flash Player 11 is one of the most notable improvements resembling something closer to Dolby Surround Sound.

An essential add-on

One of the essential accessories for internet browsing and videos, if you haven't installed Adobe Flash Player yet then you're in for a treat.

Google Chrome 49.0.2623.87

Google Chrome for Mac is Google's high speed web browser for Macs. Since coming onto the scene less then a decade ago, Chrome has grabbed a huge portion of the browser market to become one of the most widely used internet browsers available alongside Mozilla Firefox.

Very fast and lightweight

The first thing we noticed about Google Chrome for Mac is that it's unbelievably lightweight. While Firefoxwas consuming anything from an average of 20-30% of a Mac's CPU, Chrome for Mac barely registered on the scale, occasionally touching 1%. For anyone plagued with Firefox memory leaks and crashes, this alone is surely going to be a compelling reason to give Chrome a go.
As you'd expect, Google Chrome for Mac also features tabbed browsing, which visually, is more attractive than Firefox which tends to cram them together somewhat. Extensions and bookmarking (including syncing across machines) are included, as is Adobe Flash. Chrome for Mac only works on Intel Macs and you might find that some add-ons that you used with previous browsers aren't available for it yet. This is rapidly changing however and most popular add-ons are now available on Chrome.
Perhaps most importantly, Google Chrome for Mac is extremely quick. Surfing the Softonic site, page-loads took less then a second and all images were loaded very quickly. YouTube in particular loaded with lightening speed.

Very stable with independent tabs

Overall, the handling of sites using JavaScript in particular is mightily impressive and this has been made even better with the implementation of a V8 Crankshaft. Its also nice to know that with Chrome for Mac, even if there is a problem with one of your tabs, that it won't crash the whole browser - just the tab itself.
The final version ensures that you'll be able to synchronize not only bookmarks across multiple computers, but also browser preferences - including themes, homepage and startup settings, web content settings, preferred languages, and even page zoom settings. Meanwhile, you can also enable each extension to work in incognito mode through the extensions manager.

An excellent, reliable browser

With thousands of extensions, super fast browsing and all the intelligence and slickness you expect from a Google product, Chrome for Mac delivers an excellent browsing experience.

Mozilla Firefox for Mac 44.0

Mozilla Firefox is a free, open-source web browser that offers numerous features and customization options. Its performance is excellent, and it's designed to protect your privacy.

All the features that you need

Firefox includes several built-in features that can be extended through a vast catalog of extensions.
It offers tabbed browsing (customizable), the standard on all browsers now for quite some time. It also has an integrated search engine and is easily customizable.
From the homepage, you'll have access to a Google search box and a list of shortcuts to access your downloads, bookmarks, history, add-ons, synchronization and settings. It has all the essential features and also includes a spell checker, built-in PDF reader, navigation with geotagging, and much more.
As for security, there is a pop-up blocker, an anti-phishing filter, and features to protect your privacy, the cornerstone of Mozilla. In addition to the usual private browsing mode, Firefox gives you the option to block websites from tracking you, and can even tell you which websites you're being tracked by using the Lightbeam add-on.
Firefox offers a system that ensures that the sites you visit are reliable, also verifying that your connection is secure. Security updates are automatic to ensure that you are always protected against the latest threats.
It also provides some basic features, which are a spell checker, integrated PDF reader, navigation with geolocation, a reading mode to read without distractions, integration with Pocket and more.

Highly customizable

One of Firefox's biggest advantages is its ability to adapt to each user, made possible through the numerous customization options that allow you to organize the browser and tailor it to your needs.
Many themes are available for spicing up your Firefox interface, and you can organize your tools and most used features as you like in the menu or personal toolbar.
Add-ons are also a great way to customize the browser and increase functionality. Some add-ons have become essential, such as Adblock Plus or Video DownloadHelper, which both have several million users.
In addition, Firefox has Firefox Hello, an ephemeral chat room service, similar to Hangouts and based on the protocol WebRTC (so you will not need an additional plugin). With Firefox Hello you can also send the page you are visiting straight to your friends.
Since version 35, Firefox allows access to its extension store Firefox Marketplace from the toolbar itself.

One of the best browsers available

There's a reason why Mozilla Firefox is one of the world's most popular web browsers. It's complete in terms of features, reliability and flexibility, and it offers everything you need for browsing the web in the smoothest way possible.

VLC media player 2.2.1

If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.
In particular, VLC media player is a great alternative to iTunes, and RealPlayer. It's lightweight, fast, easy to use and most importantly, plays almost anything.

Still the most powerful free media player

VLC media player is the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today, especially when compared to others that will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things.
The program handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. V10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM, as well as the ability to play HD and BluRay.
Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic.
Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com. Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

Easy to control and create playlists

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.
VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.
The Mac interface is considerably slicker than on Windows, with a single window for everything. However, it's only available in two colors: Lion grey and QTX black. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.
Don't forget to check out some of our articles such as VLC media player v KMPlayer, How to rotate a video with VLC media player, How to sync audio with video in VLC media player and How to use subtitles with VLC media player.

The ultimate free mutiformat media player

There's very little to fault with VLC media player. It's a superb lightweight media player that will successfully play the most stubborn files where other players fail.

Notes

Note that versions of VLC media player compatible with Mac OS X 10.1 to 10.6 are available from the developer site. The main download link here is version 2 for the 64 bit Intel version compatible with OS X 10.5 and above. However, you can find VLC Player for OS X 10.4.11 Intel Macs here. There is not, and there will never be, a version of VLC media player for Mac OS 9 say the developers.
