Thanks to the Protected Mode and other security measures, it’s now much safer to fill in forms and open PDF documents with complex objects. The new Adobe Reader XI Protected Mode also includes features that safeguard your data.
With the Sharing option, you can send the document by e-mail via the Adobe SendNow service. Also, by integrating Adobe Reader with their Acrobat.com online services, you can take advantage of some interesting functions, although you’ll need an online account.

Easier to use

When compared with older versions, Adobe Reader XI stands out due to the simplicity of its interface, which only shows the essentials. To access all other functions, all you have to do is open the panels or menus.
Adobe Reader XI supports different reading modes, like full screen or normal. This means that you can use it even with a touch screen. Similarily, all the different features are very straightforward.
Adobe Reader XI has improved a great deal since version 9– it has become a PDF reader light enough to compete with other alternative readers.
On the other hand, it’s still a bit tedious to install, especially for old-fashioned PCs, and the integration with browsers is not as good as it could be. It’s sometimes better to resort to the already integrated readers.

Faster, more reliable, and simple, Adobe Reader XI is an essential tool if you need to open and print PDF documents frequently, and with the full-screen reading mode, you can enjoy PDFs even on smaller screens.

SHAREit 2.5.1.5

SHAREit lets you transfer files from different devices like phones, tablets, and computers. Using direct Wi-Fi connections, SHAREit can send files, photos, videos, and apps from one device to another. When it works, it is awesome, but when it doesn't, there's little reason to try again.

Send photos, videos, apps, and more

The core feature of SHAREit is transferring files between people without having to use cloud storage. You can share photos, videos, local music files, documents, and apps from one device to another. It doesn't matter what platform you're using because SHAREit only communicates with other SHAREit-enabled devices.
It doesn't transfer data over a general Wi-Fi connection or Bluetooth. Instead, it creates a direct wireless connection with up to five devices like a small network. Once connected to another device, files can be sent and received. You can also clone a device and send its contents to another device.
The best part of SHAREit is that it's multiplatform, including Windows PC.

Doesn't always work

Being multiplatform also causes problems for SHAREit because you have to troubleshoot connection problems on different devices. Since SHAREit doesn't use a connection over a Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth, it has to create a direct connection with another device. This means the device creates a hotspot that other devices connect to.
The app also doesn't explain that you will need to adjust your Wi-Fi settings. In the Settings menu there are options to "prefer hotspot" when sending or receiving, but the app never mentions that devices will create hotspots to share data. SHAREit is also buggy. My first attempts at transferring files caused the app to freeze. Both devices had to restart SHAREit before the transfer worked.
When SHAREit does work, it is fast. Pictures transferred quickly. Video had an uneven transfer speed and transfers sometimes looked frozen. Once files transfers are complete, the app disables the wireless connection and reverts back to the original connection. This means if you want to share another file, you have to go through the steps of starting and connection to the hotspot again.
The main problem with SHAREit is that it claims to be easy to use but it's actually kind of confusing for the average user.

Needs more polish

SHAREit has potential to be useful, but the lack of instructions and explanation make it frustrating to use. There's also a lack of polish and intuitiveness. Closing the hotspot connection makes sense, but having to go back through these steps to start another transfer is annoying.
There are a lot of easier options to transfer photos and files. SHAREit is good for video, but that depends on how large the file it.
SHAREit promises on ease of use, but hasn't reached that goal yet. If you want to transfer files, try Pushbullet.

If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.

VLC media player is the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today, especially when compared to others that will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things.
The program handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. V10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM, as well as the ability to play HD and BluRay.
Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com.
Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

How does it work?

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.
VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.
Finally, the interface in VLC media player has been somewhat improved in version 2 although it remains strictly functional. However, you can download skins to completely change VLC media player's appearance. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.

Complete and free

VLC Media Player is quite simply the best multimedia application for Windows and Mac. It plays just about anything, hassle free - what more could you need?

Free PDF Reader

On occasion it is hard to elucidate on a product any further than its name, which is exactly the case with Free PDF Reader. It is free, and it is a PDF reader - so if that is what you are looking for then you are in the right place. However, it is hard to recommend when Adobe's PDF reader is also free.

Doing its thing

Free PDF Reader allows you to open and view any PDF files you have downloaded with ease. It offers a good range of basic options, such as seeing single or multiple pages at a time, navigating from a sidebar or dragging the page, and the ability to copy and convert text for editing in another program.
All of these options can be accessed either using the standard windows taskbar tabs, or handily representative icons. Oddly though, these icons look slightly archaic, feeling like a holdover from a pre-XP incarnation of Windows.

Other things doing its thing better

Despite it working there are some issues that dog Free PDF Reader - perhaps the greatest of which is the existence of Adobe Reader. While the leading software for PDF reading may look a little more intimidating and business like, it proves far better in every respect while also offering more versatility. And yes, it too is free. That said - and I have no way to test this - I suspect that on older machines Free PDF Reader may be less resource intensive than the most recent version of Adobe's reader.
One other, more annoying problem, is Free PDF Reader's insistence on promoting its other products. The programs it pushes are related (such as one which converts PDFs into Word documents), but placing webpage shortcuts on your desktop to promote them is just invasive.

Just okay

Honestly? Free PDF Reader is just fine. There is very little to it, but it works, and if the Adobe option is too resource heavy for your machine this is a reasonable alternative.

Yahoo! Messenger 11 allows you to chat to your Yahoo! and Facebook friends via instant messaging.
To bring Yahoo! Messenger up to date, Facebook chat has been integrated into the latest version, along with social games like Mafia Wars. You can now use video chat in full-screen mode, and the 'Always On' feature means you'll stay connected whether on mobile, at home or at work.
You can of course update your Facebook status from Yahoo! Messenger, and also on Yahoo! What hasn't changed from the previous version is the amount of bloat in the app. Some people may appreciate the shared videos, social games (as shown in the video here), radio stations, emoticons, search bar and so on. However, all this stuff adds a lot of weight to the Yahoo! Messenger, and it feels unsophisticated today. The video call quality in Yahoo! Messenger is pretty good, however, and in fact if it stuck to being a chat app, we would recommend it more highly!
The amplification of social aspects in Yahoo! Messenger isn't a revolution. If you love all the bells and whistles, you'll love this app, but many people will find it annoying and intrusive.

Facebook Pro

Facebook Pro is an app whose only function is letting you use your favorite social network without a browser. It doesn't require installation, and there are no options.

After launching Facebook Pro, the application will immediately load your Facebook homepage. The user experience is just what you'd expect: you can log in and read your wall, send private messages, update your status, and change your account settings, among other Facebook functions.
Unfortunately, the program doesn't include special options or add any new features that improve the usability of the social network.

An icon on the taskbar

As an app, the icon for Facebook Pro is pinned to the Windows taskbar. This means that you can easily access Facebook even if your classic browsers aren't open.

It's not exactly essential

If you always want to Facebook at hand and easily accessible from the taskbar, then Facebook Pro is the program for you.
Unfortunately, there are no big claims to fame here: the software is just a window that launches the social network, and nothing else. In addition, it uses a lot of resources; during the test, it occupied about 130MB of RAM, which is too much for such a limited app.

UC Browser is very popular on mobile devices, and now it's finally available for Windows desktop too. It looks very similar to Google Chrome, but has some additional features and is more personalizable.

UC Browser joins an ever growing list of browsers based Chromium, which explains its immediate similarity to Google Chrome.

Many alternative browsers specialize in personalization, and UC Browser is no exception. It has a button especially for this, so you can change theme quickly and easily. As of right now, there aren't a huge number of themes to choose from, but those available are of a high quality and significantly change the look of the browser. This is in contrast to Google Chrome themes, which offer only subtle changes. The list of background images is pretty large, with hundreds of categorized photos to choose from.
You can choose from two start screens, one which is similar to Opera's Speed Dial, and another which is made up of elegant bubbles you can personalize with your favorite websites.

Perfect if you already use it on mobile

UC Browser is an interesting alternative to Chrome that is easy to use, configurable, and provides some useful additional features.
Without a doubt, the overall experience isn't so amazing that we'd recommend throwing Firefox or Chrome in the garbage. However, as it synchronizes perfectly with its mobile versions, it's highly recommendable if UC Browser is already your mobile browser of choice.
